About UsSacred Hoop Trading started in 1987 at the request of friends who wanted to buy Native American art. At that time, most of the interest was for southwestern jewelry, pottery and sandpaintings. My parents, who are both full-blooded Lumbee Indians from southeastern North Carolina, began collecting in the late 1960s while my father was a student at the University of New Mexico. Several years later, we moved to Arizona, where my father worked for the Indian Health Service. Pottery, rugs and paintings by the Navajo and Hopi became permanent fixtures in our home. When I went to college at the University of North Carolina, I took a few pieces to remind me of home, eventually giving most of them away to classmates at school. Friends started coming by wishing to purchase pieces. As the requests continued, I developed more of a selection and decided to make a small business out of it. Eventually, I started purchasing for private collectors, museums and stores. Now, 12 years later, my "small business" is not so small, and has its own website. As a collector primarily, I have always tried to purchase works of art that I would keep for myself. Many of the artists I buy from not only create works that have a deep meaning to them and their native communities, but they also make their living and feed their families on the works they create.
